Brenda Barrett, Palliative Care Coordinator and Quality Assurance Assistant

Brenda Barrett, Palliative Care Coordinator and Quality Assurance Assistant

A resident of Bailey, Brenda has worked at Mount Evans since 1987. As our Palliative Care Coordinator, she sets up new admissions for the Palliative Care team, coordinates medical records and visit notes, participates in Palliative Care team meetings, and calls to check on patients who are not seen very often. As Quality Assurance Assistant, she coordinates lab and chart reviews, updates TB and flu shot records, and writes reports for government regulatory agencies. Brenda is a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and sees Mount Evans patients in that capacity as needed. Before coming to Mount Evans she was a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Brenda loves hiking, fishing, skiing, skating, and traveling. She says, “Mount Evans folks are some of the best people on the planet to work with.”

Kim Elliott, Billing/Accounts Receivable Clerk

Kim has lived in Evergreen for 26 years and loves watching the birds, elk, deer, foxes and occasional bear congregate around the bird feeders. The joy of her life is her family, especially her little grandson, Sage. Hobbies include collecting books, enjoying culinary experiences, and creating worlds in miniature. Kim says, "Working for Mt. Evans is a dream for me--to contribute positively to the community in which we live, and work with the amazingly kind and compassionate staff."

Lori Fortier, Executive Assistant and Medical Records/Office Assistant

Lori Fortier, Executive Assistant and Medical Records/Office Assistant

Lori has two jobs at Mount Evans: Executive Assistant and Medical Records/Office Assistant. In addition to providing administrative support to Mount Evans’ board of directors and president/CEO, she handles the complicated processes of compiling and maintaining complete and accurate medical records for all of our patients. Lori holds an M.A. in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from the Naropa Institute and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California. She also has certificates in corporate law and medical billing and coding. Before coming to Mount Evans in 2015, she worked as a paralegal and in various administrative-support positions. She lives in South Evergreen with her two children and their Samoyed, Val. She enjoys connecting to nature, travel with family/friends, bicycling, yoga, dance, and backpacking. About Mount Evans, Lori says: “I can’t imagine finding myself in a better setting—nonprofit organization, healing/altruistic professionals, providers of skilled, compassionate, empathic service to all in our extensive community—I am beyond grateful to be part of the Mount Evans ‘family.’”

Jill Garrou, RN, Intake Coordinator

Jill Garrou, RN, Intake Coordinator

Jill works as Intake Coordinator and visits patients in their homes as needed. Before coming to Mount Evans in 2011, she held various positions in long-term care facilities from staff nurse to director of nursing. She also served as Home Health Program Director for the United Way in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jill received her RN and BSN degrees from Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. She lives in Evergreen with her husband; they have a dog, a cat, three kids, and five grandchildren,She enjoys cooking and travel, and her passion is working with Kitovu Mobile Hospice in Masaka, Uganda. She is a member of Mount Evans Memory Quilters, a group that creates quilts from the clothing of deceased loved ones and presents the finished product to the person’s family. Jill says, "My co-workers at Mount Evans are compassionate, professional, progressive, generous, and willing to work at solving challenges for the best outcome to those we serve -- and for each other!”

Susan Harper, Special Projects

Susan Harper, Special Projects

Susan worked at Mount Evans as Executive Assistant from 1991 to 2002, and again from 2011 to 2012. Since then, she has worked on an as-needed basis on numerous special projects including designing agency forms, securing event sponsors, and various writing projects including policies and procedures, employee handbook, and nominations of volunteers for special recognition. Prior to coming to Mount Evans, she worked for 14 years at COBE Laboratories (now Terumo BCT) in human resources, sales, and global marketing. Before their recent move to Littleton, Susan and her husband lived in Evergreen for 25 years. They have two rescue dogs. Susan is an avid birder, volunteer, and member of the Evergreen and Denver chapters of the Audubon Society. She enjoys hiking, knitting beading, and reading bird books. “I love working at Mount Evans because the agency’s premise is like no other business I’ve ever known. The value they bring to the community and world is difficult to describe and measure. The agency has been here for so many folks for decades.”

Sharon Holstlaw, Executive Assistant

Sharon came to Mount Evans in 2013 after working for three years for Susan Stearns (Management Team page). She has a degree in Respiratory Therapy and at one time worked at Conroe Regional Hospital in Conroe, Texas. She lives in Evergreen, likes to read, and calls herself a “workout fanatic.” She adds, “I love working at Mount Evans. I have never met such a nice group of people. Everyone is so helpful and always has a smile on their face. I am thrilled to be part of such a dynamic organization, and I hope to work here for many years to come.”

Cindy Hunt, Bookkeeper/Payroll Clerk

Cindy Hunt, Bookkeeper/Payroll Clerk

Cindy supports the finance department by doing bookkeeping, payroll and accounts payable work. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois and her Master's degree in Instructional Design from Western Governors University. She has taken associates classes in bookkeeping as well. Cindy was a substitute teacher for Jefferson County for thirteen years prior to getting into accounting work. She is married with four children and two dogs, and has lived in Evergreen for 24 years. She enjoys attending country music concerts and travelling with her family. Cindy says, "I am very excited to be working at Mount Evans because of the wonderful work they do for our community. It is an awesome organization and I am extremely happy to be part of it."

Katie Mullen, Administrative Assistant

Katie received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Colorado State University and started working at Mount Evans in 2009. She lives with her sister on Herzman Mesa in Evergreen, and enjoys reading (almost anything), watching movies, and spending time with her two cats. Katie says, “Mount Evans is a fantastic place because all the people who work there are wonderful to be around.”

Julie has been with Mount Evans since 2005. She attended Fairview General Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio. She lives in Conifer with her family and their golden retriever, Otis. Julie likes to hike, play tennis, travel, and hang out with her family. She says, “I’ve never worked any place like Mount Evans – where I am genuinely so proud to say I work here…with the most amazing, caring people!”

Evelyn Newton, RN, CHPN, Intake Coordinator

Evelyn Newton, RN, CHPN, Intake Coordinator

As Intake Coordinator, Evelyn accepts referrals from physicians and hospitals, compiles information about the new patient, then schedules staff to admit and care for the patient. She takes calls from field staff, notifies them about new orders and patient information, and answers questions when patients and family members call the office. Evelyn received her RN from the College of Marin. She obtained Hospice Administrator certification in 2000, followed by Hospice & Palliative Care Nurse certification in 2004. Before coming to Mount Evans in 2013, she held most hospice RN positions, including case manager and clinical director. Evelyn and her husband live in Black Hawk. They have two daughters, five grandchildren, and two cats. Evelyn likes to read, quilt, and camp in the Newtons’ small trailer. “I enjoy being part of an agency that provides vital services to mountain-area residents,” she says. “I am always proud to tell people where I work, and to hear their stories about how Mount Evans has served them or their family.”

Amy Rabbio, Bereavement Administrative Assistant

Amy helps the bereavement team with their administrative needs so they can focus on counseling. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology and worked as a medical technologist in Chemistry and Blood Banking for ten years. She also worked at Jefferson County Public Schools for ten years, prior to coming to Mount Evans. Amy is married and has two adult boys, two dogs and enjoys painting, knitting and sewing in her spare time. You'll often see her beautiful artwork for sale at our silent auction events. Amy says, "I am happy to work at Mount Evans because of all the wonderful things Mount Evans does for our community and because it is such a great group of people to work with."

Stephanie Richardson, Patient Care Department Assistant

Stephanie Richardson, Patient Care Department Assistant

Stephanie inventories and orders supplies used by our field staff. She also attaches patient admission paperwork to their electronic files and follows up with physicians to obtain their signatures on all patient orders. Previous positions include human resource manager of a large nonprofit health care organization based in Louisville, Kentucky and office manager for a small business here in Evergreen. Stephanie came to Mount Evans in 2015. She enjoys hiking and sewing. "I have just completed my first upholstering effort," she says. "It seemed to fall under the 'successful' category, so I'll be trying that again." About Mount Evans, Stephanie says, "What Mount Evans does to assist those in the mountain community needing hospice care is impressive; but, their awareness of additional needs within the community, and their willingness to expand to address those needs, makes this organization and those working within it exceptional."

Rita Rice, Info & Tech Specialist

Rita did a short stint as a volunteer for Mount Evans before coming aboard as an employee in 2009. She has a degree in Marketing from Texas A&M University and an MBA in Information Technology from the University of North Texas. She lives in Evergreen with her family including her small (90 lb) Lab, Aladdin. Rita likes to hike, ski, cook, read, and enjoy time with family and friends. She says, "The opportunity to work with such great people supporting such an important mission in this community is truly an honor for me."

Debbie Schwartz, Customer Relations

Debbie is the first person you see when you visit the Mount Evans office. As our receptionist and front desk manager, she is our communications hub. Before coming to Mount Evans in 2012, Debbie was assistant manager at the Red Rocks Community College bookstore for 13 years. She holds a degree in Art Education from Boise State University. She lives in the Bailey area with her husband, Bill, and their white boxer, Rosie. Debbie loves pottery, reading, knitting, yoga, sewing, cooking, traveling, hiking, and camping. She says, “Mount Evans is truly a wonderful place. It offers a supportive and caring atmosphere, opportunities to learn, a culture of kindness, and true community support. I love being able to help in so many different ways — from volunteering for events to helping clients learn that there is someone here who will listen.”

Camille Schmitz, Insurance Specialist

Camille Schmitz, Insurance Specialist

Camille is responsible for the full accounts receivable cycle for Mount Evans' private insurance and Medicaid patients. Before joining the Mount Evans staff in 2014, her work experience included Salesforce CRM administration and customization; implementation of web-based practice management software for a small business; accounts receivable for a range of industries from legal to property management; public affairs for Fairfax County Parks; and chair of the Bergen Leadership Council (Jeffco Accountability Committee). Camille has lived in Evergreen since 1993. She has a B.A. degree from George Mason University. She loves skiing, hiking, and movies. She says, “Mount Evans is an Evergreen institution. It has an exalted reputation in our community, and I am proud to work for an agency that serves our community so well and in so many ways. I believe Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice is one of Evergreen’s entities that gives our unincorporated town a sense of place and cohesiveness."
